A toxic algae bloom has rapidly become an environmental and economic disaster at Diamond Lake in the Oregon Cascades, where the few diehard tourists that still visit swim in a makeshift pool on the shore. The lake is unusable due to the green algae, which can cause debilitating sickness. The rampant algae growth is linked to the accidental introduction of a non-native baitfish, which upset the natural balance that kept the algae in check. Scientists are now studying the impact of poisioning the entire lake and starting over from scratch. Either way, it may be years beore the algae is gone and tourists return.
