"He did a lot to help black people. They beat him up, put him in jail, and he kept coming back. He was led by God. That was the whole purpose. He was just fighting for people's rights and they blew him away," says Calvin Nichols about Martin Luther King Jr., as he lights up a cigarette while sitting in the entrance of the Martin Luther King Jr. Plaza & Laundromat on 45th Street in Gifford, FL. Nichols has lived in the area for 52 years and has seen many of the changes that have taken place in the area and on the street. "Ain't nothing bad about North Gifford Road (MLK Jr. Blvd). You gotta go to 43rd street for that," he said.
